I’ve been reading a lot lately about the explosion in 3D printing and really want to start making my own stuff. I downloaded Cheetah 3D to start figuring out how to make the STL files needed to send to a printer(…just need the time now to sort it all out!) I have a background in sculpture so this really appeals to me and I think there needs to be a real Bleeker out there…something to sit on a desk or even roam around the house:) Perhaps a Karl and Refurb would be good too!
There are so many great options these days. You can email your design to a company like Shapeways and they’ll print your object for you or even sell your designs in their online print-on-demand store. Or you can buy your own home 3D printer from the guys at Makerbot. They just released their new model the Replicator 2 which can produce fantastic detailed models. (check out the promo video)
So, all of this is to say, this week the gang will get a 3D printer in the house to start making their very own replacement parts…and of course everything goes smoothly!
Mmm..okay, maybe not.
If you do 3D printing, post some comments or links here. Also check out the latest issue of Wired for more.

This is a a perfect match for you, Jonathan!
All you need to do – not that it’s easy to do for non-sculptors – is design the 3D original! And it’s not like with the old days of taking three months to knock off just one. Then when the basic initial modelling is done, it’s a snap to do variations from an established library.
One day you will be designing and selling actual, functional Bleeker robots. This blog and the comic strip will chart the course to that reality. The comic strip is a vision of the future you will realize.
There’s an alternate reality comic strip here as well – a future pre-story about the creation of Bleeker. Great tie in with engineering too.
Will Bleekers read Bleeker?
If the Bleekers start their own comic strip, then I’m in trouble…
Never mind Bleeker. I want my own Refurb.
I’ll see what I can do!

I like the potential for repairing stuff and not having to have replacement parts shipped from some far flung place (if they can be found at all).
